THE MUSE — YLANG MESSENGUIRAL

Named after the ylang-ylang flower, she describes its scent as wild and dominant. There are worse introductions.

New York based, French-Malagasy model. Recently, she’s returned to painting. Personal, sarcastic, a little dreamy.

What does she do when nobody is looking? Nothing. She’s quite clear about that.

We appreciate the honesty.

Daily ritual? An ice cube on her face. She's already the coolest.

THE TRANSCRIPT

SIR: What does the word muse mean to you?

Ylang Messenguiral: To me, I think muse defines feminism and creativity. Or femininity and creativity.

SIR: What do you think makes someone memorable?

YM: I do remember people because they're actually good listeners. You'll be memorable if you're a good listener to me.

SIR: What are you drawn to in other women?

YM: I like creature of habits. I like when you have a routine and you feel good about your routine. Doesn't matter what it is, but as long as you feel good and comfortable doing it, I think I'm really drawn to that.

SIR: What is a daily ritual or routine that you stand by?

YM: 100% it is putting an ice cube on my face every morning, like the first thing in the morning.

SIR: Who or what are you currently musing over?

YM: I don't think I do have “a muse”, but I get inspiration from everything that's around me... my friends, my family, nature.

SIR: What are you currently creatively interested in at the moment?

YM: Recently I've been back to painting. I had a break for like a couple years and it's been like a good year that I'm actually back into producing and doing my own paintings.

SIR: How do you feel when you're painting?

YM: I feel so much better. I feel good, actually, which I'm really happy about.

SIR: Can you describe your paintings in three words?

YM: Personal, sarcastic, and a little bit dreamy.

SIR: Is that how you would describe yourself?

YM: Yeah, fuck it.

SIR: What is something you do when nobody is looking?

YM: Definitely nothing. If nobody is looking at me, I do nothing. I'm not active. I'm on hold.

SIR: Where is your spiritual home?

YM: Madagascar. I feel Madagascar is also such a spiritual place.

SIR: Is that also your happy place?

YM: Yeah, it is.

SIR: Do you have other happy places, or places where you feel at ease?

YM: In nature, in the forest, it would be a place where I feel at ease with myself, at peace, for sure.

SIR: I read this about you, but I don't know if it's true. You named after the ylang-ylang flower?

YM: It's true. Ylang-ylang is a flower from Madagascar and it's usually made for perfume. It's very flowery, it's very fresh. Ylang-ylang means flower of the flower.SIR: If your intuition or your gut could send you a text message, what would it say?

YM: Don't listen to your brain.

SIR: When was the last time you changed your mind about something and what was it?

YM: Oh my god, I change my mind for literally everything and nothing at the same time. I just changed my mind earlier because I wanted to go shopping, but I was too tired. So I took a nap.

SIR: If you could only take three items to an island to live for the rest of your life, what would they be?

YM: A comb, my wallet and a straw.

SIR: What for?

YM: I don't know, drink coconut water.

SIR: Would you say that you are a practical person?

YM: No.

SIR: Do you follow your gut or your mind?

YM: I will say I want to follow my gut, but my brain is always taking advantage of it all the time. Brain first, and then gut maybe sometimes.

SIR: Would you say you're type B or type A?

YM: 100% type B. I forget my bag and my wallet. Sometimes my passport. Pretty much everywhere I go. Always have my lighter though.

SIR: When did you forget your passport?

YM: Last summer in Paris.

SIR: Do you have a big family?

YM: I have two sisters. That's enough. Three girls in the same house? Come on. It's like we're fighting, grabbing each other hair... but great sense of fashion. Two sisters. Don't need more. And a cat. A cute little cat.
