SIR: What does the word muse mean to you?
Malgosia Bela: Oh, it means inspiration, but not only that - inspiration, obstacles, drama, struggle also, in order to get to the artistic goal. I mean, it's life.
SIR: Do you see yourself as a muse?
MB: I do see myself as a muse, but I also see a lot of people as my muses. So I see musing as a very two-way street and a process that goes always both ways. It's not only inspiring, but being inspired as well… It's a dialogue.
SIR: How do you, as someone who has worn many many clothes in many instances, how do you see clothing as a transformation?
MB: I see it as part of transformation, definitely, because I think this process of transformation happens or comes from within… and certain clothes make you feel a certain way, and that's how it translates into a picture or film, or just being in 3D like we are right now.
SIR: Do you think that that's an inherently female experience?
MB: I don't know, but as a female I can say that's definitely something that happens every day on many levels.
SIR: How has your relationship with a camera changed, especially since you started filmmaking?
MB: I don't think it's changed. I started doing this, being in front of the camera, almost three decades ago. So there was a moment when I kind of ‘got it’ pretty quickly or ‘felt it’, so to speak. Then I think it only could evolve from then on. You feel it or you don't feel it, you know, it's hard to really learn it. But once you feel it, then you can practice it. So I've been practicing it for a long, long, long time.
